Guinée-Bissau : Umaro Sissoco Embaló exfiltré et arrivé sain et sauf à Dakar
The president of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, was evacuated and repatriated to Dakar on Thursday evening following the rapid deterioration of the security situation in Bissau, the Senegalese government announced in a statement from the Ministry of African Integration. The operation was carried out by Senegalese authorities who, "under the personal leadership" of President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, have remained in direct contact with all stakeholders since the beginning of the crisis.
According to the statement, an aircraft specially chartered by the Government of Senegal was dispatched to Bissau to facilitate the exfiltration of President Embaló, as well as the repatriation of several political and diplomatic officials and members of election observation missions affected by the violence.
According to the office of Minister Cheikh Niang, this emergency operation comes as ECOWAS, meeting in an extraordinary summit, strongly condemned the attempted coup in Guinea-Bissau. Senegal played an active role in this virtual meeting, calling for the immediate restoration of constitutional order and the release of all those arrested during the events.
The Senegalese head of state emphasized to his West African counterparts the importance of protecting the population and ensuring that all electoral processes take place in a peaceful environment. ECOWAS leaders also decided to establish a small mediation committee, which will travel to Bissau soon.
With the safe arrival of President Embaló in Dakar, Senegal reaffirms its willingness to work with ECOWAS, the African Union and international partners to support dialogue and the rapid restoration of constitutional order in this neighbouring country.
