Guinée : Vers la fin des ennuis judiciaires pour l’ancien président de l’Assemblée nationale

After more than three years in detention, former National Assembly President Amadou Damaro Camara could finally be released by the end of the month. According to his lawyers, "all the conditions are met" for his release, scheduled for October 27, 2025, the date corresponding to the end of the sentence handed down against him by the Appeals Chamber of the Court for the Repression of Economic and Financial Offenses (CRIEF).

Sentenced to three years and six months in prison and a fine of five million Guinean francs, Damaro Camara must also pay one billion Guinean francs in damages to the State, in order to hope to regain his freedom on the date indicated.

But his lawyer, Lancei 3 Doumbouya, remains optimistic: "We have taken all the necessary steps. To date, the conditions required by the courts are being fully met. We are finalizing the final formalities to guarantee our client's freedom on October 27," he said.

A former leading figure in the Alpha Condé regime, overthrown on September 5, 2021, Amadou Damaro Camara was placed in custody on April 27, 2022. He was prosecuted for embezzlement of public funds, illicit enrichment, money laundering, corruption, illegal taking of interests and complicity.

At the heart of the case: 15 billion Guinean francs intended for the development of the site of the future headquarters of the National Assembly on the evicted Koloma plateau - funds that the courts believe were embezzled.

In December 2024, the CRIEF Trial Chamber sentenced Damaro Camara to four years in prison, a fine of 10 million Guinean francs and 5 billion Guinean francs in damages, to be paid jointly and severally with his co-defendants Michel Kamano and Jin Sun Cheng, alias "Kim".

But on May 22, 2025, the appeals chamber, presided over by Judge Daye Mara, partially overturned this decision: Jin Sun Cheng was acquitted for lack of sufficient evidence, while Damaro Camara's sentence was reduced to three years and six months, with reduced fines and damages.

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, Amadou Damaro Camara should therefore be released on October 27, 2025, putting an end to more than three years of legal troubles.
