La Croix-Rouge alerte sur la situation "catastrophique" à El-Facher au Soudan

The humanitarian situation in El-Facher, in western Sudan, remains catastrophic, 100 days after the city fell to paramilitaries, the Red Cross warned on Tuesday, fearing further atrocities in neighboring Kordofan.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) says it is "extremely concerned" about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Sudan and its impact on civilians.

On October 26, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary militia, seized El-Facher after a 500-day siege of the capital of North Darfur and last stronghold of the regular Sudanese army in the region.

Massacres, sexual violence, kidnappings, and looting have been reported. Since the capture of El-Facher, the paramilitaries have concentrated their offensives on Kordofan, a vast region rich in oil and gold.

This has been "100 days of fear and displacement" of populations in El-Fasher, during which "civilians have paid the heaviest price," said Pierre Kremer, IFRC's deputy regional director for Africa, at a press conference in Geneva.

"The IFRC remains extremely concerned (...) by the conflict ravaging the country, which undoubtedly constitutes the worst humanitarian crisis in the world," he stated.

"What happened in El-Facher is likely to be repeated, to some extent, in Kordofan, where the situation is deteriorating, particularly in the south."

The Sudanese army announced on Tuesday that it had broken the long siege imposed by paramilitaries on Kadougli, the capital of South Kordofan.

One hundred days after the start of the conflict, "the situation in El-Fasher remains catastrophic," he stressed. Humanitarian operations are largely suspended. Humanitarian access to the city is extremely limited.

The local branch of the Sudanese Red Crescent was unable to reach El-Facher, but local volunteers are assisting victims of the attacks in displacement camps located elsewhere in the country.

Mr. Kremer, who noted that 21 of his colleagues from the Sudanese Red Crescent had been killed in action since the start of the conflict, urged the international community to end the fighting and help humanitarian organizations save lives.
