L'Afrique du Sud souhaite fabriquer des génériques du vaccin préventif contre le VIH
The South African government has asked a group of laboratories to manufacture generic versions of Lenacapavir, the HIV preventative vaccine. Pretoria is counting on this product, administered twice a year, in its goal of eradicating AIDS by 2043.
To achieve this goal, the country needs one to two million doses per year. The problem is that it will only receive 500,000 doses per year from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria for 2026 and 2027.
To bridge the gap, South Africa is therefore counting on local production of generic Lenacapavir from 2027. But the approach faces a major difficulty: none of the three South African laboratories selected has a license from Gilead Sciences, the inventor of lenacapavir, to manufacture the vaccine.
More than 170,000 new HIV infections were recorded in the country in 2024.
