L'Afrique du Sud veut candidater à l'organisation des JO 2036 ou 2040 (gouvernement)
South Africa has the "intention" to "bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games" of 2036 or 2040, a minister at the presidency indicated on Thursday without specifying the identity of the possible host city.
Having already been the first country on the continent to host the FIFA World Cup in 2010, South Africa will enter into "continuous dialogue" with the International Olympic Committee, now chaired by Zimbabwean Kirsty Coventry.
This is a "preliminary and exploratory engagement," explained South African Minister Khumbudzo Ntshavheni during a press briefing on Thursday.
Cape Town had submitted a bid to host the 2004 Olympics, which ultimately returned to Athens in a vote in 1997.
"The government is confident that South Africa is ready and able to host the Olympic Games, given its existing infrastructure and the fact that the investments needed to improve it are not substantial," the minister said.
During a visit to the country in October 2024, the previous IOC president Thomas Bach believed that South Africa had "the stability, the infrastructure and the vision to host the Olympics".
Next year, Dakar is set to become the first city on the African continent to host the Youth Olympic Games, from October 31 to November 14, 2026.
The next Summer Olympics, in 2028, are being held in Los Angeles and the following ones, in 2032, have been awarded to Brisbane in Australia.
In the midst of an offensive on the sporting scene, South Africa is a candidate to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix at its historic Kyalami circuit, near Johannesburg, starting in 2027.
The continent's largest economy is also the main host country for the Men's Cricket World Cup in 2027.
