Will Algeria and Mali finally bury the hatchet? It's far from certain. Bamako is fed up with Algiers' "interference" in its internal affairs and has repeatedly made it clear to the Arab Republic that it is not one of its provinces.
The tone used is often cold, unfriendly, even insulting. Algeria, however, has not ceased to speak out about the situation prevailing in its southern neighbor.
On Tuesday, while holding a press conference at his ministry headquarters, Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf expressed his concern about the "rise of terrorism" in Mali.
This "concerns and worries us"
"What Mali is experiencing today, namely the rise of terrorism which has reached unprecedented levels and limits, concerns and worries us more than anyone else, and saddens us more than anyone else," said Mr. Attaf.
He hopes that (Malian) leaders will understand that the solution to this crisis "can only come from an inclusive policy, responsible dialogue and comprehensive reconciliation between all citizens of the country, without discrimination or distinction and far from any foreign interference, whether political or military."
Meanwhile, the minister continued, Algeria will continue to "extend a hand to its brothers in the State of Mali because it has inexhaustible patience to face all the overwhelming problems of its neighborhood, with wisdom, serenity and foresight, and because it believes in the unity of historical heritage, the unity of aspirations and the unity of destiny."
This constantly motivates her to extend a hand of solidarity, cooperation and fraternity to all her brothers to contribute effectively to the security, stability and prosperity of her neighborhood and her area of belonging.
Algeria has not changed its rhetoric
It should be noted that the North African country, while extending a hand to Mali, has not fundamentally changed its stance on the country. It remains convinced that if Bamako had prioritized "responsible dialogue among all citizens of the country, without discrimination or distinction," the country would not be facing the "rise of terrorism" today.
She hopes that Malian leaders "will wake up and realize the inevitability of a return to the political path in order to make up for lost time in efforts to avoid imminent catastrophes not only for the State of Mali, but for the entire region."
