Fifty-one foreigners, including 50 Chinese, all convicted of cyberterrorism and online fraud have been deported from Nigeria, the Nigerian Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the country's anti-corruption agency, announced Thursday.

"The expelled nationals include 50 Chinese and one Tunisian," the EFCC said in a statement, without specifying the date of their departure, the date of their conviction, or the sentences handed down.

These new departures bring to 102 the number of foreigners expelled since August 15, the agency said.

They are among the 192 foreigners arrested during a major operation last December in the upmarket Victoria Island district of Lagos, in which a total of 792 people were arrested.

It is one of the largest foreign cybercriminal groups dismantled in Nigeria, according to the EFCC, which specifies that at least 148 of the foreigners arrested in December are Chinese.

"Further evictions are planned in the coming days," said EFCC spokesman Dele Oyewale.

According to the agency, foreign criminal networks based in Nigeria are enlisting Nigerian accomplices to trap victims online using phishing techniques, primarily targeting US, Canadian, Mexican and European citizens.

Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, has for years been cited for the practices of its cyber fraudsters, known in local slang as "Yahoo Boys."

In recent months, the EFCC has conducted multiple operations in clandestine training centers where young Nigerians learn the ropes of online fraud.
