Législatives en Côte d'Ivoire: le parti au pouvoir largement en tête selon les premiers résultats
The ruling party in Ivory Coast is far ahead according to the first legislative results announced bit by bit on Sunday by the Independent Electoral Commission (CEI) and is heading towards a large majority in the National Assembly.
More than eight million voters were called to the polls on Saturday, two months after the presidential election largely won by Alassane Ouattara, in power since 2011.
But the election, boycotted by the party of former president and now opposition leader Laurent Gbagbo, did not generate much enthusiasm, with the IEC estimating participation at 32.34% (compared to 37.88% in 2021).
According to the first results concerning more than a hundred of the 255 seats in the country, the Rally of Houphouëtists for Democracy and Peace (RHDP) is winning almost everywhere.
Unsurprisingly, he achieved a clean sweep in the north of the country, his historical stronghold, with 98.95% in Bouaké, the country's second largest city, 99.92% in Korhogo and even 100% in Boundiali and Odienne.
And the RHDP continues to consolidate its presence in the southern and western areas, where the opposition was historically strong.
Among the power figures in the running, Vice-President Tiémoko Meyliet Koné was elected with 99.93% in Tafiré (north), former Prime Minister Patrick Achi obtained 82.75% in Adzope (south) and Youth Minister Mamadou Touré 79.06% in Daloa (center).
The results in the economic capital, Abidjan, were not yet known on Sunday afternoon.
The scores of two candidates will be particularly scrutinized: those of the president of the National Assembly Adama Bictogo and the powerful Minister of Defense and brother of the President Téné Birahima Ouattara, respectively RHDP candidates in the popular communes of Yopougon and Abobo.
The main opposition party, the Democratic Party of Ivory Coast (PDCI), fielded candidates, but the first results suggest a setback, with several incumbents having been defeated.
The party spokesman, Soumaïla Bredoumy, who has been imprisoned since the end of November for "terrorist acts" and "conspiracy against the authority of the State", was nevertheless re-elected in Tankessé (northeast).
Finally, some independent candidates were also elected, some being dissidents from the RHDP, others candidates from Laurent Gbagbo's party who chose to maintain their candidacy despite their party's boycott order.
This overwhelming trend of the ruling party is in line with the election of Alassane Ouattara two months ago for a fourth term with 89.77% of the votes and a participation rate of 50.10%, in an election from which several opposition figures were excluded.
Comprising 255 seats, the outgoing National Assembly has 163 members from the RHDP, 66 from the PDCI, 18 from the PPA-CI and 4 independents. Four seats are vacant.
