« L’énergumène d’Alger » : Le Mali charge le ministre algérien des Affaires étrangères, à la tribune de l’ONU
We certainly won't be recalling it. Mali filed a complaint with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) against Algeria after one of its drones was shot down in Tinzaouatène on April 1st. Bamako is convinced that it was the Algiers regime that perpetrated this "aggression."
He filed his application against the Maghreb country on September 4, 2025, at the ICJ and announced it to the public. On September 13, Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf held a press conference, during which he denied the existence of such legal proceedings. On September 19, he backtracked! A press release issued by his ministry finally acknowledged Mali's filing of an application against Algeria at the ICJ. However, the document specifies that this legal action was initiated by Bamako after the September 13 press conference.
“A high-performing self-scorer”
Speaking yesterday Friday at the United Nations, Malian Prime Minister Abdoulaye Maiga reminded Mr. Attaf that "the filing of the application by Mali on September 4 never meant its automatic registration by the International Court of Justice." He continued: "Assuming that the Malian complaint was triggered by his press conference, the Algiers energumen demonstrates that his vision of diplomacy is to push other states to sue his country before international bodies, thus becoming a successful self-killer, popularly known in Mali as "Yabe." Troubling!"
Algiers fears "being publicly exposed as an aggressor and supporter of international terrorism"
The Malian Prime Minister also indicated that his country was not at all "surprised by the Algerian junta's headlong rush to accept the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice following the case of the destruction of a Malian drone, thus fearing to be publicly exposed as an aggressor and supporter of international terrorism." Ultimately, he called on neighboring Algeria to "cease supporting international terrorism and to become resolutely involved in promoting peace and security, in a constructive spirit, while respecting the sovereignty of States."
