L’Ethiopie interdit les sociétés de paris sportifs
The Ethiopian Lottery Service (ELS) has issued a directive announcing the immediate ban on sports betting companies throughout the country.
The directive banning sports betting companies in Ethiopia follows a joint investigation by several agencies into alleged financial irregularities and illegal practices within the sector.
The measure, applicable immediately, concerns both companies currently in operation and those previously suspended.
The ELS indicated that this decision is based on the findings of a comprehensive nationwide review of the betting and finance sector, which highlighted widespread violations of licensing agreements and illicit financial transfers that pose a threat to national security.
The ELS has warned that all betting activity, online or otherwise, must cease immediately and that deposit platforms and payment channels are required to cease operations.
Operators are required to securely store server data, financial documents, and user information. The ELS directive emphasizes that the destruction, alteration, or concealment of evidence will be subject to criminal prosecution under Ethiopian law.
This ban is part of a large-scale crackdown conducted jointly by the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS), the Financial Security Service, and the Federal Police, which has led to the arrest of several owners and partners of sports betting companies. Financial institutions, payment instrument issuers, and payment system operators have been notified that the licenses of all betting companies will be officially revoked within the next two weeks.
