Libye : au moins 53 migrants morts ou portés disparus après un naufrage en Méditerranée
At least 53 migrants were killed or went missing after a boat sank off the Libyan coast on February 6, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced.
The boat capsized north of Zuwara, in northwestern Libya. Only two Nigerian women were rescued during a search and rescue operation conducted by Libyan authorities. According to their accounts, one lost her husband and the other her two babies in the tragic incident.
"The boat was carrying African nationals attempting to reach Europe via the Mediterranean. It left the city of Zawiya, near Tripoli, on the evening of February 5, and capsized about six hours later, after taking on water," the IOM said in a statement.
According to the UN agency, this shipwreck brings to at least 484 the number of migrants who have died or gone missing on the Central Mediterranean migration route since the beginning of 2026.
The IOM reiterates that this route remains the most dangerous in the world for migrants, with 1,340 deaths recorded in 2025. Faced with this alarming toll, the organization calls for strengthened international cooperation and protection-focused responses, particularly to combat smuggling and human trafficking networks. It also emphasizes the need to create safe and regular migration pathways to reduce risks and save lives.
