Lutte contre l’exploitation illégale du sable minier : un site démantelé à Moussala
The Senegalese Armed Forces conducted a major environmental security operation in Moussala, in the Kédougou region, resulting in the dismantling of a clandestine mining sand processing site illegally installed on the banks of the Falémé River.
This intervention is part of the measures to protect the Falémé River, a strategic waterway where the Senegalese administrative authorities have formally prohibited any mining and processing activity within a radius of 500 meters, in order to preserve the ecosystem and water resources.
It is in this context that the 2nd Company of the 34th Infantry Battalion of Kédougou, based in Moussala, conducted a targeted operation in the immediate vicinity of the locality, specifically on the riverbank.
A significant amount of equipment was seized and destroyed.
The results of this operation are significant. The military seized several pieces of equipment used in illegal mining, including:
• Nine (09) motorcycles,
• Two (02) wheelbarrows,
• Eight (08) tricycles,
• Fifteen (15) motor pumps.
In addition, forty-two (42) artisanal devices, commonly called "spitters", used for processing mining sand, were destroyed on site.
The operation also resulted in the arrest of sixty (60) foreign gold miners, including sixteen (16) Burkinabe nationals and forty-four (44) Malian nationals, involved in these illegal activities.
A strong message in favor of environmental protection
Through this action, the military authorities reaffirm their determination to fight against the illegal exploitation of natural resources and to enforce the regulations in force, particularly in sensitive areas such as the banks of the Falémé river, which are highly exposed to environmental risks.
This operation also sends a strong signal to illegal operators and reflects the Senegalese State's commitment to strengthening the monitoring and security of mining sites, with a view to preserving the environment and maintaining public order.
