Mali: des civils fuient une ville après une attaque jihadiste (sources locales et militaire)
Civilians fled the Malian town of Farabougou after a jihadist attack this week on an army position in the central part of the country, local and military sources told AFP on Saturday.
Soldiers evacuated the military camp in the town, which was attacked by jihadists on Tuesday, the same sources told AFP.
Since 2012, Mali has been facing a profound security crisis fueled in particular by violence from groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda, the Islamic State (IS) organization, as well as community criminal groups.
No information was available on the death toll from the attack in Farabougou, as well as another carried out the same day against the town of Kassela, 40 kilometers from the capital Bamako, in a context of difficult and restricted access to information for material, security or political reasons.
Since the attack on Farabougou, "civilians have been fleeing the town and other villages. Several hundred (residents) continue to flee. The jihadists control the town. They even held Friday prayers in Farabougou," a local official told AFP, requesting anonymity for security reasons.
A military source confirmed to AFP that the army was no longer in the town on Saturday. "We are not in Farabougou today, but that is a strategic move. We are preparing to return there," she said.
"The town of Farabougou is empty. Civilians left the town after the jihadist attack. The military also left" the town, another local official confirmed to AFP on Saturday.
A resident said he fled Farabougou for the neighboring town of Dogofri: "We civilians decided to flee. We walked. Many civilians were on the road fleeing (the town). Others (residents) left for other villages," he said.
The attacks in Farabougou and Kassela on Tuesday were claimed by the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM in Arabic) in messages published on its Al-Zallaqa propaganda platform.
JNIM claims to have taken control of the Malian army's "military barracks and headquarters" in Farabougou, a claim that has not been confirmed by the authorities.
The junta, which came to power after two coups in 2020 and 2021, has turned away from Western partners, notably the former French colonizer, to turn politically and militarily towards Russia.
