Mali: deux généraux de l'armée inculpés par un tribunal militaire
Abass Dembélé and Néma Sagara, respectively a brigadier general in the army and a general in the air force, are among the dozens of military personnel arrested and then imprisoned in early August after being suspected of wanting to overthrow the junta that came to power after two coups in 2020 and 2021.
They were subsequently discharged from the army in early October, along with nine other military personnel.
According to a judicial source, the two high-ranking officers appeared before a military tribunal on Wednesday and Thursday.
"They have been formally charged with 'attempted destabilization, undermining state security' by the investigating judge of the 4th military cabinet in Bamako," she told AFP on condition of anonymity.
A security source confirmed to AFP that they had been charged with the same offenses.
Lawyers for both Mr. Dembélé and Ms. Sagara told AFP that they had managed to see their clients for the first time since their arrest. General Abass "has lost a lot of weight but is holding up," his lawyers said. As for General Sagara, she "is finding it difficult to cope with the burden of detention," according to her lawyers.
These arrests were mainly carried out within the national guard, a branch of the Malian army, according to security sources and relatives of those involved.
The National Guard is the corps of origin of the Minister of Defense, General Sadio Camara, one of the main figures of the junta.
Mali has been facing a deep security crisis since 2012, fueled in particular by violence from groups affiliated with the jihadists of Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State (ISIS), as well as by community-based criminal groups. This is compounded by a severe economic crisis.
