Mali: l'ex-Premier ministre Choguel Maïga inculpé et écroué (sources judiciaires)
Mali's former civilian prime minister, Choguel Kokalla Maïga, dismissed in November by the military in power since 2020, was charged Tuesday with "damaging public property" and placed in custody, judicial sources told AFP.
Mr. Maïga was appointed Prime Minister in 2021 by the junta led by General Assimi Goïta, before being dismissed at the end of 2024 after criticizing it.
He had deplored in particular being kept out of decisions on the retention in command of the generals who had initially promised to return power to elected civilians in March 2024.
The former Prime Minister, who has been in police custody for a week, was remanded in custody after a hearing before the investigating chamber of the Supreme Court and will face charges of "damage to public property, forgery and use of forged documents," a judicial source told AFP.
No date has been set for his trial.

Eight of his former colleagues were also taken into custody on August 12 in the same case and are currently being questioned by the investigating chamber.
"We believe in justice, we are calm while awaiting the trial," the former Prime Minister's lawyer, Cheick Oumar Konaré, told AFP.
Audits carried out in January 2025 accused Mr. Maïga of financial wrongdoing, which he has always denied.
