Migration irrégulière : 124 Guinéens interceptés au Sénégal parmi 238 migrants secourus en mer
A pirogue carrying 238 migrants from several West African countries was rescued off the coast of Senegal, south of Cape Manuel, about ten nautical miles away.
According to the National Division for Combating Migrant Smuggling and Related Practices (DNLT), the rescue operation was carried out by the Senegalese Navy, before the migrants were handed over to the competent authorities.
Of the 238 people rescued, Guineans represent the largest group: 124 migrants, including 60 men, 48 women, and 16 minors. The other passengers are of Senegalese (61), Gambian (39), Malian (4), Ghanaian (3), Ivorian (4), and Sierra Leonean (3) nationality.
According to initial investigations, the pirogue left Gambia, specifically Djinack, on the night of December 5-6, 2025. After several days at sea, it reached Mauritanian waters before suffering a mechanical failure when its engines detached. The captain, identified as Moussa, reportedly abandoned ship with a sick woman and their child, promising to return with new engines. He has not been seen since.
Left to their own devices, the migrants eventually alerted the navy to request assistance. Nine people, including three minors, were evacuated to Abass Ndao Hospital for medical treatment.
Authorities have arrested ten suspected crew members who are being held in custody as part of the ongoing investigation. The other migrants, mostly Guineans, were released after being questioned.
These facts serve as a reminder of the scale of the clandestine migration phenomenon in West Africa, where many young people risk their lives in the hope of a better future.
