Swiss-Cameroonian activist Nathalie Yamb, known for her radical pan-Africanist views and recently sanctioned by the European Union for pro-Russian activities, has announced that she has received a diplomatic passport from Niger and has been appointed special advisor to the head of the country's junta.
Niger is governed by General Abdourahamane Tiani, who came to power in a coup in July 2023. He pursues a sovereignist policy and has turned his back on the West, particularly France, accusing the former colonial power of wanting to plunder or destabilize his country.
"I would like to express my deep gratitude to the President of the Republic of Niger, Head of State, Army General Abdourahamane Tiani, for the trust shown through my appointment as special advisor and the issuance of a diplomatic passport," the woman who calls herself "The Knight of Niamey" said on her Facebook page on Wednesday evening.
"This gesture (...) is an act of solidarity and a recognition of our collective fight for African sovereignty and dignity," she continued.
At the end of June, Nathalie Yamb, who has 850,000 subscribers on Facebook and nearly 600,000 on YouTube, where she posts a number of posts hostile to France's policy and presence in Africa, was sanctioned by the European Union for her pro-Russian activities and positions.
The sanctions include an entry ban and a freeze on the activist's assets in the EU, who resides in Switzerland.
Last year, the Nigerien junta also granted a diplomatic passport to Beninese Kemi Seba, another radical pan-Africanist activist, who was stripped of his French nationality.
Niger, along with its two neighbors, Burkina Faso and Mali, also ruled by juntas, forms a confederation: the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).
The three juntas share the same hostility towards the West and France in particular.
On Monday, the AES justice ministers expressed their "strong indignation" at the European sanctions targeting Nathalie Yamb and at the "harassment" they said was being carried out against pan-Africanist activists like Kemi Seba.
