"On a eu un paquet de problèmes avec les Français" : la pique de Trump sur Fox News
In an interview with the conservative media outlet, the American president did not appreciate being contradicted on the issue of foreign students, and stated that "the French are no better" than China, which is accused of spying on and stealing US intellectual property patents.
Donald Trump doesn't like being challenged on issues close to his heart. And France learned this the hard way on Monday evening during a no-holds-barred exchange on the conservative Fox News channel. During this lengthy interview, journalist Laura Ingraham wanted to raise the issue of foreign students allowed to study in the United States. The discussion quickly veered into a rather fierce and unexpected critique of France.
Donald Trump may not have expected to be contradicted in this way on Fox News, the channel he's close to and which he reportedly watches constantly. But on this issue of foreign students, journalist Laura Ingraham refused to let it go.
“Many MAGA supporters aren’t thrilled about these hundreds of thousands of foreign students in the United States,” the interviewer launched into a tirade. “You said that 600,000 foreign students would be able to come and study in the United States? How is that a pro-MAGA position?”
Two opposing currents exist within the Make America Great Again movement, the slogan that has become a political force: those, often close to the tech sector, who believe that America needs foreign talent; and those, more ideologically driven and following in the footsteps of former advisor Steve Bannon, who advocate a strict ban on immigration. The issue is dividing the American right.
Donald Trump initially did not respond on the level of ideas, but on the level of business. "If we halved the number of foreign students, which would certainly please some people, half of American universities would go bankrupt," the President suggested.
"So what? Does our system depend on China then?" Laura Ingraham retorted.
"The French are no better..."
"It's good to have people from other countries," Donald Trump timidly suggested, while immigration police are currently conducting a relentless hunt against undocumented immigrants.
That's when the conversation took an unexpected turn, as the journalist wouldn't let the matter drop. "But they're not French, they're Chinese. They're spying on us, they're stealing our intellectual property..." Laura Ingraham asserted.
Cornered, Donald Trump then let slip what he thinks of France: "And you think the French are any better? I'm not so sure. We've had a lot of problems with the French. Our technologies have been taxed very unfairly. They've put a 25% tariff on American products."
The tirade, short but harsh, seemed primarily aimed at France's treatment of the GAFA companies, those large corporations accused of reaping substantial profits within the country without contributing sufficiently through taxes. A proponent of deregulation when it benefits French businesses, Donald Trump apparently still hasn't gotten over it.
He concluded this exchange with the Fox News journalist, who was confronting him with demands that differed from those of his MAGA base, by returning to the essential point: "Listen to me carefully: MAGA is my idea. No one else's. I know what the MAGA world wants better than anyone else. And the MAGA world wants to see our country prosper."
