ONU : Le Togo plaide pour une cartographie fidèle de l’Afrique
Speaking at the 80th United Nations General Assembly on September 27, 2025, Togolese Foreign Minister Robert Dussey denounced the under-representation of the African continent on world maps.
According to him, the Mercator projection, inherited from the colonial era, artificially reduces the size of Africa in favor of Europe and North America. He pointed out that Africa, with more than 30 million km², represents nearly 20% of the Earth's surface and could contain several major powers combined.
Togo is therefore calling on the UN and the African Union to support the "Correct the Map" movement for decolonized and more accurate cartography. Lomé considers this approach essential for the dignity and international recognition of the continent, which today boasts 1.4 billion inhabitants and a growing role in the world.
