Ouverture d'une enquête en Libye sur l'assassinat de Seif al-Islam Kadhafi
The Attorney General's office in Tripoli announced on Wednesday the opening of an investigation into the death the previous day of Seif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi, and confirmed that he had been shot dead.
The prosecutor's office indicated that a team accompanied by forensic doctors and experts traveled to Zenten, in the west of the country, on Tuesday and examined the remains of the man who had long been considered his father's potential successor.
"This examination established that the victim had been fatally shot," he said in a statement posted on Facebook, adding that he had initiated criminal proceedings to try to identify and find the suspects.
No information was immediately available regarding the funeral arrangements for Seif al-Islam Gaddafi.
Wanted by the ICC for crimes against humanity, he was arrested in 2011 in southern Libya. Long detained in Zintan, he was sentenced to death in 2015 following a summary trial before being granted amnesty.
Until the announcement of his death, his whereabouts were unknown.
Since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya has struggled to regain its stability and unity.
Two executives are vying for power: the Government of National Accord (GNU) based in Tripoli, led by Abdelhamid Dbeibah and recognized by the UN; and an executive in Benghazi (east), controlled by Marshal Khalifa Haftar and his sons who have extended their military presence to the south of the country.
So far, Libyan authorities, both in the east and the west, have made no comment.
Seif al-Islam Gaddafi's French lawyer, Marcel Ceccaldi, told AFP that his client was killed in the house where he resided in Zenten by "a commando of four people", who have not yet been identified.
