Relations between Algeria and Mali deteriorated sharply following the shooting down of a Malian army drone in Tinzaouatène on April 1. Bamako accused Algiers of being the perpetrator of this act of "aggression." It subsequently filed a complaint against President Tebboune's regime with the International Court of Justice.
The high court confirmed that it had received Bamako's request, thus correcting Algiers, which had denied the existence of such a complaint.
"An attempt to instrumentalize this august judicial body" of the UN
Yesterday, Friday, September 19, the Maghreb country accused the military in power in Bamako of wanting to exploit the ICJ.
"The approach of the (Malian junta) to the ICJ is clearly an attempt to exploit this august judicial body of the United Nations in a desperate attempt to find a scapegoat that would exonerate it from its responsibilities in the tragedy it is inflicting on Mali," charged the Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, in a press release.
Further, he states that "this maneuver (by the military power in Bamako) is too crude to be credible." "Algeria will not be an accomplice and denounces its shameless nature," he added.
"This same junta led Mali to political, economic and..." disaster
Ahmed Attaf also noted a "paradox" in this referral to the ICJ.
"This paradox," he said, "lies in the fact of seeing the Malian junta, which has trampled on legality and constitutional order in its country, worrying about the law that it despises internally and to which it falsely claims to adhere internationally."
This power "has led Mali to political, economic and security disaster. It is itself the instigator of a moral bankruptcy," continued the head of Algerian diplomacy.
This strong response from the Maghreb country to the Bamako authorities is symptomatic of the tension that exists between the two countries. Algeria has announced that it will notify the ICJ "in due course" of its refusal of the procedure, which it describes as a maneuver.

Enough is Enough
