Presidential Election in Guinea: "At the rate things are going, Sidya Touré will not be a candidate..."

Présidentielle en Guinée : « À l’allure où vont les choses, Sidya Touré ne sera pas candidat… »

With less than three months to go before the presidential election scheduled for December 28, 2025, the candidacy of the president of the Union of Republican Forces (UFR), Sidya Touré, appears increasingly compromised. Between his absence from the national territory, failure to register, and reaching the age limit (80 years), the obstacles to his participation in the election are piling up. In an interview given this Saturday, October 4, 2025, to Guineematin.com, Mouctar Khalissa, national youth secretary of the UFR, acknowledged the complexity of the situation, suggesting that his party could ultimately be content to observe the electoral process. "It's a very good thing that the date of December 28 has been set, because we need to emerge from this transition. But this should only be possible if the transitional president respects his commitment not to be a candidate," he declared.

A symbolic but hampered candidacy

For the UFR, the choice of candidate is unambiguous. "The UFR has only one candidate: Mr. Sidya Touré. But we must tell national and international opinion that the Guinean authorities refuse to let him return to the country. They refused to renew his travel document, which is tantamount to banning him from Guinea," accused Mr. Khalissa. According to him, the refusal to renew his official documents and his exclusion from the electoral register reflect a political desire to sideline the former Prime Minister. "At the rate things are going, Sidya Touré will not be a candidate. He was refused registration; he is neither a voter nor eligible. This is political exclusion," he laments.

The UFR is preparing to remain on the sidelines of the vote

Believing that the transition "is not intended to exclude the country's children," Mouctar Khalissa announced that his party would adopt an observer position. "Our approach is to remain a simple observer. We will not play a role in an election whose rules are already biased. The UFR will be an observer of the situation and will see how things evolve," he concluded. As political tensions mount in the run-up to the election, the likely absence of Sidya Touré, a historic figure on the Guinean political scene, risks weighing heavily on the credibility and diversity of the electoral landscape.
