Recomposition des chaînes d’approvisionnement : l’UEMOA se tourne vers l’Asie
In 2023, Europe lost its position as the main supplier to the countries of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU), with a share of imports of 35.1%, slightly lower than that of Asia at 35.4%. China remains the leading Asian supplier, confirming its central role in trade with the region.
European imports consist mainly of refined petroleum products, capital goods, intermediate goods, and food products, with France as the main supplier. This pattern illustrates the persistence of historical ties but also the need for the WAEMU to diversify its sources of supply.
African imports rose to 19.7%, dominated by Nigeria and Ghana, primarily for energy products and intermediate goods. This trend reflects increasing regional integration and greater reliance on continental partners.
Purchases from America declined slightly to 7.8%, consisting of food products, capital goods and petroleum products.
At the national level, Côte d'Ivoire remains the main importer within the Union, followed by Senegal, Mali and Burkina Faso, highlighting the role of these countries in structuring and diversifying regional trade flows.
This development shows that the WAEMU is repositioning its supply chains while adapting to global geopolitical and economic transformations.
