Sommet lundi à Conakry sur les tensions aux frontières du Liberia, de la Sierra Leone et de la Guinée

A "tripartite summit" of the heads of state of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone will be held on Monday in Conakry regarding the "border dispute" and the tensions of recent weeks at the common borders of these three countries, the Guinean presidency announced Sunday evening.

In a post on its Facebook page, the Guinean presidency announced the participation of Guinean President Mamadi Doumbouya, his Liberian counterpart Joseph Boakai, and Sierra Leonean leader Julius Maada Bio in the summit. The participation of Côte d'Ivoire, which shares a border with Guinea and Liberia, was also announced, but "as a witness country," according to the statement.

These four countries are members of the Mano River Union, an organization aimed at facilitating free trade, infrastructure development (particularly roads) and strengthening security in the Mano River basin.

On Thursday, the Liberian government called on its population living on the border with Guinea to "remain calm" and avoid an escalation after tensions broke out in the region, leaving one person injured.

In late February, border incidents also occurred between Guinea and Sierra Leone, with both countries accusing each other of military incursions into their territories along their common border.

According to Freetown, the Guinean army had arrested and detained several Sierra Leonean soldiers and police officers for several days on its territory, following clashes between the two sides.

Guinea and Sierra Leone share more than 700 kilometers of border.

In April and May 2025, tensions had already risen following military movements on both sides of the border in another region, near the town of Yenga (northeast Guinea), generating panic and concern among local populations.

In this border area, the village of Yenga has been disputed for over 50 years. The territory is claimed by Sierra Leone, but Guinean soldiers are still present there.
