Souvenir : Il y a 28 ans disparaissait l'historien ElHadj Assane Marokhaya Samb
It is 28 years to the day that Elhadji Assane Marokhaya Samb, historian and lyricist from Cayor, more precisely in Sakal, passed away. He was one of the greatest custodians of Wolof oral tradition. His perfect mastery of the history of Senegal, from Cayor to Baol, passing through Sine-Saloum to Casamance. With elegance and eloquence, he participated in the great historical moments of the political and cultural history of Senegal. Born in 1926 in Sakal in the Cayor of the depths, from a great line of griots, once the guardians of tradition. Son of Marokhaya Coumba Ndiangan, worthy notable and very close to the royal lineage and the family of Damel Madiodi Dégéne Kodou. His family has always accompanied the kings in the most glorious battles and the darkest nights of the royal family, collective memory of their people.
Heir to a collective memory with parents who were witnesses to history, Assane Marokhaya Samb was nothing other than an encyclopedia of the traditional history of ancient kingdoms. Traveler, researcher, Assane Marokhaya Samb made many journeys in Africa and the rest of the world to strengthen his knowledge by adding strings to his bow.
At a young age, his research and studies allowed him to be among the most respected historians and religious leaders of the elite. According to his brother and friend, the great traditional communicator Elhadji Mansour Mbaye, with whom he traveled to several different countries, Assane Marokhaya Samb was a knowledgeable man. Together, they were received by President Mobutu Sese Seko thanks to Assane Marokhaya Samb's elegance and charm in his way of telling the history of Senegal and that of Africa.
"He traveled in all directions and on several occasions to the places where the events he tells us about took place; he drew, with constant and tireless energy, from all the sources capable of providing him with information, and he only decided to get to work when he was completely sure of himself," explains Elhadji Bathie Samb, his brother. A fervent and practicing Muslim, with a perfect mastery of the Koran, very close to the religious guide Serigne Cheikh Mbacké "Gaynde Faatma", together, he had a legendary friendship. Beyond being his religious guide, their discussions were always focused on religion and the history of Senegal. A regular guest of Radio Senegal International at the time on numerous programs dedicated to the history of Senegal such as "Regards sur le Sénégal", presented by Alassane Ndiaye, or in the program "Senegal Demb", presented by Mansour Mbaye, in the presence of griots and historians.
HIS WORKS!
Assane Marokhaya Samb was both a writer and essayist who loved to share his knowledge through his writings, which led him to write his famous work "Kaadjor Démb", published in 1964, republished in 1981 by Nouvelles Éditions Africaines du Sénégal. A literary masterpiece full of history and adventures that explain the history of Cayor. His interventions, endowed with profound reflection, and his conferences are today used as a means of research and sources for the new generation. Beyond his role as a historian, he was also a unifier. He is one of the great activists for the implementation of a good professional organization for all griots, whom he considered the custodians of the ethical values of society. He died on August 23, 1997, and rests peacefully in the holy city of Touba.
Seneweb pays him another vibrant tribute.
