Tentative de Coup d'Etat au Bénin : L'Union africaine réaffirme sa politique de « tolérance zéro »
The African Union (AU) strongly condemned the attempted military coup that took place in Benin on December 7, 2025. In a statement, the Chairperson of the Commission, Mahmoud Ali Yousouf, reiterated that any intervention by the military in political affairs constitutes a serious violation of the organization's founding principles.
The AU demands an immediate end to illegal actions and calls on the coup leaders to return to their barracks, reaffirming the primacy of constitutional order and democratic legitimacy. It also encourages national actors to prioritize dialogue and the preservation of peace.
Expressing its concern over the resurgence of coups d'état in the region, the continental organization reaffirms its policy of "zero tolerance" for unconstitutional changes. It offers its support to President Patrice Talon, the legitimate authorities, and the people of Benin, and states its readiness to assist the country in the full restoration of constitutional order.
