Tensions are running high this Monday, February 9, 2026, in Kaloum, the administrative heart of the Guinean capital. Heavy gunfire was heard from the early hours of the morning near the Coronthie Central Prison, plunging the area into an atmosphere of fear and confusion.

Scenes of panic in the streets of Kaloum

At dawn, residents and workers reported successive explosions around the central prison. Panicked, officials and citizens turned back, abandoning their vehicles and offices to seek shelter.

The main thoroughfares of Kaloum quickly became impassable, choked with massive traffic jams and scenes of indescribable chaos. “We no longer knew where the shots were coming from, everyone was running,” said a witness contacted at the scene.

A forceful raid by special forces on the Central Prison

According to security sources, these shootings were linked to a raid by special forces that took place the previous day, Sunday, February 8, at the Conakry Central Prison.

In four pickup trucks, members of the special forces reportedly surrounded the prison for a mission to extract Commander Aboubacar Sidiki Diakité, alias Toumba, who is being held in connection with the trial for the September 28, 2009 massacre.

The inmates were confined to their cells for several hours, without access to the yard. After heated discussions between the special forces and prison administration, the operation was ultimately called off. The officers reportedly withdrew, promising to return later that night.

Violence, injuries and chaos at the prison

Tensions then escalated inside the prison itself. Rebellious inmates broke down their cell doors, triggering a general stampede.

Exchanges of gunfire broke out, leaving two people seriously wounded by gunfire and several detainees tied up with rope by security forces.

“It was total panic, we could hear screams and gunshots without understanding what was happening,” confided a prison officer under the condition of anonymity.

Toumba transferred to Coyah after the confusion

On Tuesday, February 10, 2026, the Prosecutor General's Office at the Court of Appeal of Conakry announced, in an official statement, the transfer of Commander Toumba Diakité to the Central Prison of Coyah.

The statement specifies that a surprise search and control operation conducted on February 9 at the Central Prison resulted in the seizure of phones, drugs, and bladed weapons. Toumba reportedly refused to submit to the search, uttering threats against the security officers, which allegedly “compromised the security of the facility.”

Faced with this situation, the prison administration decided to transfer him immediately, “in order to preserve order and security”.

The judicial authorities' silence is worrying.

This new episode raises serious questions about the governance of the prison system and the increasingly frequent extrajudicial operations at the Central House.

In recent months, several detainees — including military personnel accused of attempted coup — have been extracted without official communication.

Some, like Lieutenant Morciré or Lieutenant Mara, have not been heard from since their transfer.

For now, the Ministry of Justice remains silent on these events, while Kaloum remains under high tension and the population lives in fear of a new confrontation.
