A snake bite proved fatal. Nigerian singer Ifunanya Nwangen died in her sleep on Saturday, January 31, in the country's capital, Abuja, BBC Africa reports. The 26-year-old rose to fame after participating in the third season of "The Voice" in Nigeria in 2021.
Sam Ezugwu, a close friend of the singer and co-founder of the Amemuso choir, paid tribute to "a rising star" of the music scene. Trained as an architect, Ifunanya Nwangen was supposed to give her first solo concert this year.
"The snake bite woke her up."
Interviewed by BBC Africa, Hillary Obinna, another of her friends, explained that the young woman was asleep when she was attacked and that "the snake bite woke her up." She went to a nearby clinic for treatment, but when antivenom was unavailable, she went to the hospital.
Sam Ezugwu immediately rushed to his friend's bedside. "While they were trying to stabilize her, she couldn't speak but she could make hand gestures. She was having trouble breathing," he recounted. Since one of the two antivenoms he believed were needed was missing, he went to get it. By the time he returned, his friend had already passed away.
"Our medical staff provided immediate and appropriate care, including attempts at resuscitation, intravenous infusions, intranasal oxygen and the administration of a polyvalent antivenom against snake venom," the hospital responded in a statement, denying any failure to meet its obligations.
According to the hospital, Ifunanya Nwangen's condition deteriorated rapidly following serious complications. She was transferred to intensive care, but doctors were unable to revive her.
This tragedy comes amid a tense situation for hospitals in Nigeria. Last January, author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie accused a Lagos hospital of negligence after the death of her 21-month-old son. He had received a Propofol overdose, which likely led to his cardiac arrest.
