Uranium : Le Niger va déposer une plainte contre Orano après cette découverte dangereuse
In Niger, the Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Alio Daouda, held a press conference on Tuesday, December 2nd, regarding the situation between Niamey and the French nuclear fuel giant Orano. During this briefing, the Minister revealed the discovery of "400 barrels containing radioactive core samples, a highly toxic material whose exposure endangers the lives and health of Nigeriens."
Risk of "respiratory problems"
"Dose measurements taken on these materials (discovered in Madaouela in the Arlit department) reveal a toxicity level varying between 7 and 10 microsieverts per hour, while the normal dose is 0.5 microsieverts," the authority reports. It specifies that the samples taken showed the presence of two substances, namely "Bismuth 207 and Chromium X, capable of contaminating a person within 10 meters, potentially causing acute respiratory problems."
"Planning of mass crimes "
For the Minister of Justice, it is clear that Orano has "harmed and continues to harm the health of the Nigerien population by planning mass crimes characterized by the use of radioactive substances"...
He recalls the "refusal of the French group to (respect) the court decisions which (ordered) it to proceed with the removal or treatment of several million tons of radioactive waste left in the open air, with all the consequences which the world of science knows and which communities experience horribly."
In light of all these facts, "the State of Niger has taken all measures to pursue Orano and obtain compensation for all the damages suffered by the populations, after having assessed with national stakeholders the extent (of these) in environmental, social, health, educational and pastoral terms," the Minister of Justice indicated.
