Économie : les urgences de Al Aminou Lô
In an interview with the newspaper Le Soleil, Professor Amath Ndiaye, an economist at the Faculty of Economics and Management (FASEG) at Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD), analyzes the priorities of the new government. According to him, the appointment of Ahmadou Al Aminou Mohamed Lo comes at a particularly difficult time, marked by "a crisis of financial confidence, significant budgetary constraints, and high social expectations." In this climate, one of the urgent tasks will be to restore the confidence of investors and financial partners in order to support economic recovery.
The expert identifies two major challenges: reviving growth and restoring public finances. He emphasizes that growth forecasts now stand between 2.2% and 2.5% in 2026, a rate deemed insufficient to meet the employment needs of a young and rapidly growing population. At the same time, the debt burden and rising servicing costs significantly reduce the government's budgetary flexibility.
To meet these challenges, Ousmane Sonko's successor will be able to draw on his experience and credibility. A former national director of the BCEAO (Central Bank of West African States) for Senegal and a former minister, he enjoys a "solid reputation among national and international stakeholders" and is described by the national daily newspaper as "a man of dialogue, capable of combining technical rigor with a sense of the public interest." These qualities could help him find a balance between budgetary discipline and responding to social expectations, particularly in the context of sensitive reforms such as those concerning "energy subsidies."
To make these reforms acceptable, the economist finally reminds us that "the State must first set an example" by reducing its standard of living, in order to guarantee a fair distribution of efforts.
