Le Sénégal mise sur son gaz pour booster sa souveraineté économique
Ousmane Sonko announced that, starting in 2026, Senegal will cease all gas imports and rely exclusively on its domestic production. This decision is not just a symbol of energy sovereignty; it reflects a clear strategy to reduce costs and strengthen economic autonomy. The expected savings are estimated at 140 billion CFA francs, a considerable boost for public finances and household purchasing power.
The cessation of imports transforms gas into an engine of economic recovery. Businesses will benefit from more stable and competitive prices, favoring industrial production, agri-food, and energy-related services. For the government, this approach limits exposure to international price fluctuations and secures a strategic supply over the long term.
This policy is part of a broader vision of energy sovereignty. By controlling the entire chain, from extraction to distribution, Senegal is creating the conditions for a more resilient domestic market and sustainable planning, aligned with the ambitions of Vision 2050.
Beyond the economic aspects, this decision sends a strong message. External dependence is no longer inevitable, and national energy is becoming a concrete lever to support growth, reduce the country's weaknesses, and affirm the centrality of the energy sector in economic recovery.
