L’UEMOA diversifie ses marchés malgré un recul des exportations vers l’Europe

In 2023, exports from West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) countries to Europe fell by 3.2%, reaching 8,493.7 billion CFA francs. This contraction is mainly due to a decrease in gold and cocoa shipments, two products that are cornerstones of trade with the continent. Despite this decline, Europe remains a key partner, with Switzerland, the Netherlands, and France being the leading destinations.

Meanwhile, WAEMU sales to other African countries increased by 29.3%, driven by oil, gold, and chemicals. Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa are the main markets for this intra-African trade, highlighting the growing importance of continental trade for economic integration.

Asia receives mainly products such as cashew nuts, rubber, cotton and gold, while exports to America represent 4.9% of the total, mainly in the form of cocoa and rubber.

At the national level, Côte d'Ivoire confirms its position as the leading exporter in the Union, representing 42.3% of the total. It is followed by Senegal, Mali, and Burkina Faso, which also contribute significantly to market diversification and strengthening the WAEMU's presence on the international trade stage.

This development illustrates a fundamental trend. Despite fluctuations in some traditional markets, the Union is succeeding in consolidating its regional trade and expanding its markets, which contributes to the economic resilience of the Member States.
