Pouvoir d’achat : Serigne Guèye Diop affirme que « la baisse des prix est bien réelle »
The Minister of Industry and Trade, Serigne Guèye Diop, sought to clarify the sensitive issue of the prices of basic necessities in Senegal, responding to questions from members of parliament during the examination of the 2026 budget. According to him, the measures taken by the government are not merely symbolic: they have a tangible impact on the purchasing power of households.
Serigne Guèye Diop cited rice as an example to support his point: "On rice alone, we have saved nearly 200 billion CFA francs for the population." He elaborated on the price changes: "Last year, a kilo of rice cost 450 francs. Today, thanks to government intervention, we have already obtained a reduction of 100 francs per kilo."
The minister emphasized the upcoming strengthening of this measure, with a further price reduction expected to generate approximately 110 billion CFA francs in additional savings for households. "The price reduction represents 200 billion CFA francs on rice alone. It's a real benefit," he stated.
The minister also addressed the issue of designated retail outlets and price controls. The government plans to modernize retail through convenience stores, supermarkets, and hypermarkets, supported by a national purchasing center in which manufacturers and retailers will be shareholders.
In parallel, market protection and health control measures will be implemented, particularly for bouillon cubes and condiments. "The problem isn't really the bouillon itself, but the salt and other ingredients it contains. Senegalese people consume too much salt, too much sugar, too much spice. These are silent poisons for their health. We will take comprehensive measures to protect consumers," the minister emphasized.
On the industrial front, Serigne Guèye Diop announced a profound reform of Sonacos (the national oil production company), with diversification of raw materials and modernization of infrastructure to boost local production and reduce dependence on imports.
Finally, he reaffirmed the development of agro-industrial parks and zones across the country, specifically mentioning Louga, Ziguinchor, and Tambacounda. "We are going to change Senegal. Industry is the engine of development, and we now have the technical, financial, and human resources to do it," concluded Serigne Guèye Diop.
