The Senegalese government has decided to reduce electricity prices by 10%. This measure will take effect on January 1st. But how did the government manage to achieve this reduction during this period of significant budgetary uncertainty?
The Prime Minister had instructed the establishment of a committee to explore the feasibility of a price reduction. Then, within this committee, the Ministries of Energy and Finance worked to identify potential savings and efficiency improvements at Senelec. The company was incurring losses of over 100 billion CFA francs annually on its network. And that's where the work began.
“Senelec has already taken initial steps to reduce its losses. As a result, 6 billion CFA francs have been saved and allocated to the social tariff, which is now 85 CFA francs thanks to a 6 CFA franc reduction per kilowatt,” revealed the Minister of Finance. His remarks are reported in the report of the Finance and Budget Control Committee.
Thus, the reduction in electricity prices will take effect on January 1st, according to the Minister of Energy, Petroleum, and Mines. Households consuming between 0 and 150 kWh were billed at 91.1 CFA francs per kWh. "The proposal is to lower this to 82 CFA francs per kWh, representing a 10% decrease," stated Birame Souleye Diop during the session on current affairs.
For low-power professionals, who consume between 0 and 50 kWh, they were billed at 163.8 CFA francs per kWh. "Under the current measure, it will decrease to 147.4 CFA francs, representing a 10% reduction," the minister stated last Friday.

Waw! chapeau!
