École sénégalaise : Un déficit de 46 600 salles de classe, 320 000 tables-bancs…
In Senegal, the education system is experiencing significant deficits. According to the School Construction Directorate (DCS) of the Ministry of Education, there will be a deficit of 46,632 classrooms by 2025. This revelation was made yesterday during a discussion session between the ministry and Cosydep, with Minister Moustapha Guirassy present. In addition to this deficit, there are currently 6,900 temporary shelters, not to mention the dilapidated infrastructure requiring urgent intervention.
"As for the lack of basic social services, there are 7,033 schools without electricity, 2,256 schools without water points, and 5,862 schools without security fencing," added Pape Abdou Dia of the DCS.
Regarding equipment, the ministry acknowledges a deficit of 320,000 desks and benches. As for the computer equipment, it is simply obsolete. The computer network coverage of schools only concerns a small portion of establishments, and this only applies to school management, with students being excluded. There is also weak governance and administrative delays.
Thus, to address this rather worrying situation, the Ministry of Education intends to focus its intervention on this issue around three fundamental pillars: the construction, rehabilitation and modernization of school infrastructure.
Thus, there is a program to eliminate temporary shelters. There is also a five-year plan for construction, not to mention "the generalization of the basic essential services system: water, electricity, sanitation, asphalting and the fencing of all schools," adds the presenter.
In the short term, the ministry plans to transform a thousand temporary shelters by 2025. A focus will be placed on areas with high population pressure such as Dakar, Thiès, and Casamance, "with adaptation to local specificities." It is still planned to acquire 80,000 desks and benches in 2025 in addition to the 60,000 currently being repaired. For rehabilitation, 1,500 classrooms will be urgently rehabilitated. "In 2026, we are considering expanding the construction sites with the multiplication of construction sites and the large-scale deployment of bioclimatic prototypes."
