IA à l’école : des enseignants alertent sur les risques de ...

The Ministry of National Education (MEN) has announced the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into teaching content starting this fall. This initiative includes the launch of a national training program for 105,000 teachers and the distribution of 5,000 laptops to students in the first and final years of secondary school.

While this approach is considered relevant, it nevertheless raises reservations from education unions. Ndongo Sarr, general secretary of the United Trade Union Framework for Middle and Secondary Education (Cusems), interviewed by L'Observateur, believes that "the continuing education program shows that learning about AI and mastering it by the various stakeholders will take time. AI is an extraordinary tool whose ethical and responsible use will allow our young people to reach the same level as their Western counterparts."

The source from the daily newspaper of the Future Media Group nevertheless points out that certain drawbacks may arise, such as the development of laziness among students, the risk of cheating and a form of robotization that could lead to job losses.

For his part, Elhadi Malick Youm, secretary general of the Autonomous Union of Secondary School Teachers (SAEMS), quoted by the same source, supports the initiative but warns: "AI is now essential in all educational systems around the world. It is an extraordinary tool that will contribute to revolutionizing the education and training service. Any system that wants to evolve without AI will irreversibly expose itself to difficulties." He also emphasizes that "connection tools will have to be disseminated more widely and more ambitious programs to provide students with the latest generation of digital kits will have to be developed."

Furthermore, union members emphasize the need for equitable digital inclusion, arguing that the distribution of equipment should not be limited to scientific series. They believe that a collaborative effort between the ministry and other organizations, such as telephone operators, is essential to ensure access to connectivity throughout the country, including in remote areas.
