Kaffrine : Les etudiants de l'USSEIN en colère exigent bourses et achèvement des travaux
Moustapha Sène, the "delegate spokesperson for the day," announced a new student mobilization in the Kaffrine region. Following the demonstrations at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar and Gaston Berger University in Saint-Louis, "it is now the turn of the students of the Sine-Saloum El Hadji Ibrahima Niass University" (USSEIN) to make their voices heard.
Yesterday, the movement began at the Fatick campus. Today, it was the students of the Kaffrine campus who "took to the streets," erecting barricades and "burning tires and garbage on some strategic roads in the city."
The intervention of the defense and security forces, deployed to prevent the protesters from "forcing their brothers and sisters out of other establishments," led to clashes. The two sides "exchanged tear gas and stones," plunging several neighborhoods into unusual tension.
The students are demanding payment of the "scholarships of the class of 5", settlement of "scholarship arrears", as well as "the completion of the works of the University of Sine-Saloum in its entirety".
For now, calm has returned to the city, but the protesters say they remain mobilized and are "ready to step things up" if their demands are not met.
