L’UCAD dans le prestigieux classement de Times Higher Education
It's a ray of sunshine amidst the gloom. While Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD) is sadly making headlines with unprecedented police violence, we learn that it has achieved a major international milestone. Senegal's leading university has thus entered, for the first time, the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings. The 2026 edition, published on January 21st, confirms UCAD's presence among universities evaluated internationally according to rigorous academic criteria.
The University of Dakar is ranked in six of the eleven fields covered by THE: Medicine and Health (1001+), Life Sciences (1001+), Social Sciences (1001+), Engineering (1251+), and Physical Sciences (1251+). This recognition reflects the quality of teaching, the dynamism of research, and the ongoing commitment of the university community to academic excellence.
At the continental level, UCAD ranks 76th out of the 151 African universities listed in this ranking, reveals Professor Mountaga Lam, Director of Studies and Statistics. Senegal is one of the few West African countries in this ranking, alongside Nigeria and Ghana. These results were obtained thanks to a rigorous and coordinated data collection campaign conducted by the Directorate of Studies and Statistics.
This first participation represents a significant step in UCAD's international outreach strategy. Opportunities for improvement have already been identified, particularly through strengthening the data collection and governance system, comprehensively integrating scientific outputs, and progressively aligning with all eleven areas assessed by THE.
Through these strategic directions, UCAD reaffirms its commitment to consolidating its position in international rankings and to continuing its commitment to the continuous improvement of its academic and scientific performance.
