Mamadou Amadou Ly, Executive Director of Associates for Research and Education for Development (ARED), was recognized for his innovative work in Senegalese education. “Mamadou Amadou Ly’s visionary work in multilingual education provides methods that ensure a satisfactory level of instruction and open the door to numerous opportunities for learners around the world, while safeguarding linguistic and cultural identities. This shift toward inclusive and equitable learning environments is inspiring educational reform in Africa and far beyond,” commented Dorothy Gordon, Chair of the Yidan Prize for Educational Development Jury.
By winning this award, Mamadou Amadou Ly will receive 3.8 million US dollars, or 2.1 billion CFA francs, half of which will be allocated to an unrestricted project fund of nearly 2 million dollars to expand and intensify their educational initiatives.
"Under Mamadou's leadership, ARED has developed bilingual education models that significantly improve the basic reading, writing, and numeracy skills of in-school and out-of-school children. Mamadou has demonstrated the transformative power of teaching in languages that children know in addition to those they must learn in school, and has presented a scalable path for bilingual education in West and Central Africa (...) Mamadou's community-driven and culturally appropriate approach has influenced national education policy in Senegal, Mauritania, Gambia, and beyond," reads the Yildan Prize press release, reported by AFP.
