Ucad : la tension ne faiblit pas
Students at Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar (UCAD) are continuing their strike, which began on November 17, to demand the immediate and full payment of their scholarships. Initiated by Master's students, the protest has gained momentum with the support of the student associations, which reject the scholarship office's proposals as "unjustified" and are also demanding the payment of back payments.
According to L'Observateur, citing police sources, the clashes on Wednesday, November 26, Thursday, November 27, and Friday, November 28, were particularly violent, involving stone-throwing, barricades, and burning tires. The arrest of two students—who were quickly released—did not diminish the protesters' determination to confront the police, reports the newspaper, part of the Future Media Group.
Two police officers sustained minor injuries, one to the head and the other to the back, and a student was hit by a projectile. Faced with escalating tensions, the dean of the Faculty of Medicine decided to suspend classes until December 1st.
On Thursday, the clashes began as early as 7 a.m. before resuming in the afternoon, between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., with a "concert of banging pots and pans" organized throughout the social campus.
The situation then escalated inside the campus, where private restaurants and vehicles were vandalized. Some students reportedly even attempted to set fire to wrecked cars by pouring gasoline on them. However, the UCAD student association collective categorically distanced itself from these acts of vandalism, emphasizing its disagreement with the protest methods, according to the same source.
