Ucad : Les vérités du Pr Pam ZAHONOGO aux nouveaux agrégés du Cames
Last Friday at Cheikh Anta Diop University, Professor Pam Zahonogo was tasked with announcing the results of the 22nd CAMES competitive examination for professorships in Legal, Political, Economic, and Management Sciences. This was an opportunity for the professor and researcher to speak his mind to his peers.
"The agrégé is humble. Humility is truly essential. Just because you passed doesn't mean you believe those who failed are worthless, or that you now possess the whole truth. You weren't agrégés to trample others in your faculties. You were agrégés to raise others to your level."
Professor Pam ZAHONOGO also reminded them that it is pointless to be an associate professor if the next generation is not prepared.
"A graduate who does not reproduce does not deserve to be a graduate. It is based on your reproduction that we will judge whether the jury made a mistake in graduating you. You really must keep that in mind."
He also urged the newly elected members to prioritize teaching and research over personal gain. "You will have to serve our institutions. If you have been appointed to the agrégation, it is not to go to an international institution. We must tell you this. You have been appointed because we saw potential in you and we thought that you could indeed raise the level of our institutions. Therefore, you will have to accept taking on positions of responsibility within our institutions."
To the senior members who complain about the behavior of their younger colleagues, Professor Pam Zahonogo asks them to reconsider their stance and assume their responsibilities. "Today, we see in all institutions that there are tenured professors, there are full professors, but it is the associate professors who are directors and deputy directors. Then you say they disrespect you. If you want to step down, nature abhors a vacuum, and the younger members will take their place and impose their point of view on you. So, you will have to accept taking on these responsibilities."
To those who have passed the agrégation exam and think they've done the hardest part, ZAHONOGO counters that now is the time to commit themselves more than ever to research. "The agrégation is not an end in itself, it's a new responsibility. You mustn't think you've arrived."
Aggregation is not a matter of prestige or a trophy to be shown off everywhere, ZAHONOGO added.
"You are not qualified to add another line to your business card. We want you to be able to go and work for the influence of our institutions because Cames needs you to be able to train, mentor and create conditions for excellence. And so, we are counting on you to strengthen the credibility and visibility of our universities."
To achieve this, cooperation, sharing, and mutual support are essential. These are the values that, according to him, constitute the strength of the member institutions of Cames.
