In the United States, immigrants haven't exactly been enjoying a honeymoon since Donald Trump's return to the White House. The Republican billionaire has launched a massive deportation campaign against them.
The treatment sometimes inflicted on these migrants after their arrest on American soil is considered "degrading and dehumanizing" by human rights organizations such as the NGO Human Rights Watch.

In a recent interview with journalist Elise Ann Ellen, Pope Leo XIV expressed his regret over these abuses. "There are worrying things happening in the United States. In one of my last conversations with the Vice President of the United States, I spoke about human dignity and its importance for all, wherever they are born, and I hope that solutions will be found to respect human beings and the way we treat them in our policies and choices," the pontiff said.
He recalls that the Church is not against immigration.
Earlier this year, he reports, the late Pope Francis sent a letter to American bishops urging them to combat actions contrary to the Gospel, such as refusing to welcome people arriving in the country in search of a better life.
