Gambie : surprise par l’âge du Sénégalais accusé de vol, la magistrate le renvoie à la…
A young Senegalese man was brought before a court in Banjul, Gambia, last Tuesday. He is accused of stealing 34 pairs of shoes, nine bottles of perfume, cosmetics, a lawnmower, and cash from a shop in the Gambian capital. The total value of the stolen goods, according to the prosecution, is 24,800 dalasi (approximately 200,000 CFA francs). However, the accused was not tried by the court.
Les Échos, which broke the story, reports: “When questioned about his age, the teenager claimed to have been born in 2009 [16 years ago]. The magistrate then determined that the case fell under the jurisdiction of the juvenile court. She ordered the case transferred to the Kanifing Juvenile Court and kept the defendant in pretrial detention pending a reassessment of his possible release.”
The newspaper adds that the Senegalese teenager, who denies the accusations against him, will learn his fate next Thursday, the date set for his trial before the Kanifing Children's Court.
