«100 ans de Wade» : les vraies intentions de Diomaye Faye
According to sociologist and political consultant Alioune Badara Kandji, interviewed by Walfadjri, the centenary celebration of Abdoulaye Wade goes beyond a simple memorial tribute. The expert sees it as a genuine political strategy on the part of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, which, in his view, "could reshape alliances in Senegal."
From this perspective, the expert analyzes a desire for openness on the part of the head of state, whom he considers "increasingly isolated and seeking to assert his own political weight", particularly in a context of complex relations with his Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko.
By celebrating the "Pope of Sopi," Diomaye Faye is thus seeking to extend an olive branch to the Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS) in order to broaden its base. "The PDS remains a major traditional political party," explains Alioune Badara Kandji. "Despite a certain lethargy, it has a history and has accumulated a great deal of political experience. It is a party that has trained many of this country's top leaders."
End of "political dogmatism"
According to the sociologist, the President is now adopting a pragmatic approach: "This celebration could open up avenues and political strategies with the PDS. The Head of State continues his logic of alliances, but these may appear as unnatural alliances from an ideological point of view. He is no longer in a position of political dogmatism."
According to the source at the Front de Terre newspaper, Diomaye Faye - who resigned from his position as Secretary General of Pastef the day after his election to the 2024 Presidential election - is moving away from a rigid ideological stance to enter into a logic of "Realpolitik".
Although these alliances may seem "unnatural," they are facilitated by the new head of state's undisguised fascination with the work of Mr. Wade. By positioning himself as a kind of guarantor of the legacy of Senegal's third president, he wins the sympathy of liberals and all those inspired by the vision of the pan-Africanist builder.
