Abdou Mbow rappelle au ministre de l’Intérieur « ses propos » après la mort de Bassirou Faye
Today's plenary session at the National Assembly of Senegal was marked by a moment of high tension. MP Abdou Mbow directly challenged the Minister of the Interior, Mouhamadou Bamba Cissé, reviving a legal case dating back more than a decade. The parliamentarian immediately recalled the current minister's stance when he was practicing law in the case of the death of student Bassirou Faye. At the time, Cissé believed that the investigation should be entrusted to the gendarmerie, not the police, to ensure greater impartiality in the conduct of the inquiries.
Referring to these statements, Abdou Mbow emphasized the contrast between yesterday's positions and today's responsibilities. "You are now Minister of the Interior. Regardless of the investigating body, the responsibility lies with you," he asserted, even extending this responsibility to the head of government. While acknowledging the minister's legal expertise, whom he described as "a lawyer committed to human values," the MP urged him to fully assume his responsibilities in light of recent events, without, in his view, shifting the blame onto operational services.
Abdou Mbow then expanded on his remarks by addressing the victims of political violence in recent years, describing the human toll as heavy. He also responded to previous statements attributed to the minister concerning certain students, arguing that the debate should not overshadow the crucial question of accountability. Regarding the evidence presented by the prosecutor, the MP acknowledged its significance, while maintaining that the truth, as revealed through legal channels, must extend beyond official statements.
