Assemblée : Vifs échanges entre Abdoul Akhad Ndiaye et Cheikh Bara Ndiaye
The session devoted to the second reading of the law amending the Electoral Code, this Saturday, May 9, 2026, was marked by a tense exchange between MPs Abdou Akhad Ndiaye and Cheikh Bara Ndiaye, against a backdrop of disagreements over political debate and discipline within the majority.
Sheikh Bara speaks of the "courage" of Marie Rose Khady Faye
During the discussions, Cheikh Bara Ndiaye brought up the case of Minister Marie Rose Khady Faye, whom he praised for having, in his view, "the courage to take a stand" on the matter. This intervention, however, prompted a reaction from MP Abdou Akhad Ndiaye, who argued that a member of the government must, above all, adopt a republican stance.
Attempting to elaborate on his argument, the PASTEF MP was repeatedly interrupted by colleagues present in the chamber, in a particularly heated atmosphere. Despite the interruptions, Abdoul Akhad Ndiaye eventually delivered a direct response to Cheikh Bara Ndiaye.
“Indiscipline gets you nowhere,” he declared. The parliamentarian then asserted that he needed no “proxy fight” to defend his positions. “I don’t need a proxy fight because I can handle my problems myself,” he stated.
"I prefer my freedom of expression and thought."
In a notable statement, Abdoul Akhad Ndiaye emphasized his independence of mind. "I'm not counting on Sonko or Diomaye to gain anything," he declared. He added, "I prefer my freedom of expression and thought." This statement provoked further reactions in the National Assembly, with some members of the majority party preventing him from finishing his remarks.
This exchange highlights the tensions and sensitivities currently running through the parliamentary majority regarding the reform of the Electoral Code and the internal workings of PASTEF. While leaders of the ruling party publicly display a firm stance on the second reading of the law, some voices within the majority itself seem to want to defend greater freedom of expression and political autonomy.
