Attaques armées dans les zones touristiques : Le cri d’alarme de Thierno Bocoum
The tragedy that occurred on the night of August 5-6 at the Les Diamantines residence in Saly shocked the public. An armed attack of unprecedented violence, marked by a gang rape, the abuse of a young girl, and a large-scale robbery, highlighted the alarming insecurity in Senegal's tourist areas.
"This is no longer an isolated case, but a symptom of growing insecurity in tourist areas," said Thierno Bocoum, leader of the Agir movement, stressing the seriousness of the situation.
Armed gangs with impunity
In Saly, Mbour, Warang, and even Thiès, armed groups now operate with impunity. They target villas, hotels, and camps, sometimes for several hours, without being disturbed. "Their sense of invincibility fuels their audacity, plunging local populations into anxiety," denounces Thierno Bocoum.
According to him, this insecurity has far-reaching repercussions: a decline in tourism, a withdrawal of investors, a slowdown in the local economy, and a deterioration in Senegal's international image. He warns of the risk that some embassies will classify these areas as "at risk," further exacerbating the crisis.
Faced with this situation, Thierno Bocoum calls on the State to secure these high-traffic areas. He proposes:
- The establishment of specialized brigades
- Installation of surveillance cameras
- Regular mixed patrols
- Supervised community systems
- Effective alert numbers
- Reinforced security obligations for tourist establishments.
A population in distress
Beyond the tourism sector, residents live in fear. "Some organize informal patrols, sleep in shifts, and resort to parallel justice, with all the risks of derailment that this entails," he warns.
Insecurity disrupts communities, weakens social cohesion, hinders mobility, and forces families to consider leaving. "The local fabric is fractured," insists the leader of Agir.
Thierno Bocoum concludes by asserting that Senegal cannot claim to be a reliable destination if insecurity becomes the norm. "Social peace, the local economy, and national stability are at stake. Without security, there is neither tourism nor growth," he insists, calling on the state to respond immediately, firmly, and sustainably.
