Course à l’ONU : Le Rta-S mise sur Macky Sall pour porter la voix de l’Afrique
The debate surrounding the candidacy of former Senegalese President Macky Sall for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) continues to generate reactions and positions.
In a statement, the Rta-S movement reaffirmed its support for this candidacy, which it sees as an opportunity for Africa to strengthen its voice in global governance.
Macky Sall's candidacy was officially submitted in early March 2026 at the UN headquarters in New York, to succeed António Guterres, whose term expires at the end of 2026. It was presented by Burundi, whose president Évariste Ndayishimiye currently holds the rotating presidency of the African Union.
In its argument, the Rta-S highlights the leadership and international experience of the former Senegalese head of state, who led Senegal from 2012 to 2024 and chaired the African Union in 2022.
According to the movement, Macky Sall has distinguished himself through his commitment to development, regional stability and global governance reform.
His supporters notably recall his diplomatic role during the food crisis linked to the war between Russia and Ukraine, as well as his advocacy for the reform of the UN Security Council in order to grant Africa permanent representation.
The Rta-S also highlights the positions defended by Macky Sall on several international issues, including the cancellation of African debt, climate justice and equitable access to vaccines during the Covid-19 pandemic.
For the Rta-S, Macky Sall embodies "a pan-Africanist profile capable of fostering dialogue between nations and contributing to a fairer and more balanced multilateralism." The movement believes that Africa has, in him, a credible candidate to lead the global institution and defend the interests of developing countries.
