Crise universitaire : Une députée interpelle le président Diomaye
During the examination of the 2026 budget of the Ministry of the Environment, MP Fatou Diop Cisse chose to devote her speaking time to the crisis shaking Senegalese universities, particularly Cheikh Anta Diop.
In a poignant speech, applauded by the entire room, she expressed her deep concern over the repeated clashes between students and law enforcement, the suspension of classes and the delays in the payment of scholarships.
“When the situation is critical, speaking time must also be focused on the essentials,” she declared. “The authorities must address the students’ problem and find a solution immediately. For several weeks, universities have been the scene of repeated clashes, and the escalating tensions are worrying the public. Serious injuries have been reported, sometimes requiring emergency evacuation to hospitals, because dialogue has given way to confrontation,” she said.
She denounced "the intrusion of law enforcement into the student residence, under the requisition of the rector, reminding everyone that access should be for security purposes, not violence." The first-year Master's students, the parliamentarian explained, are demanding full payment of their scholarships, while the second-year Master's students are protesting the abrupt suspension of their classes.
The MP made an urgent appeal to the President of the Republic and university authorities to establish dialogue, guarantee the security of campuses and ensure the full payment of scholarships.
She insisted: "It's no longer a question of who is right or wrong, but of avoiding irreparable damage. The stability of the country is at stake."
Fatou Diop Cisse also reminded everyone that the scholarship is not a luxury, but a vital necessity for the dignity and serenity of students, covering rent, food, transport and academic support.
She concluded her speech by calling for collective responsibility and calm: "God bless them. God bless our Senegal."
