Diomaye / Sonko: Crise confirmée au Sommet?
Politics abhors a vacuum, but it abhors ambiguity even more.
The recent statement by the President of the Republic, recalling with almost glacial solemnity that his Prime Minister is a "citizen appointed" and, by definition, revocable, marks a turning point that only the blind could not see.
Beyond being a reminder of constitutional law; it is a change of tone that resonates like a thunderclap under the gilded paneling of the Palace.
Senegal experienced a historic change of power on the evening of March 24, 2024, the result of a powerful convergence of two destinies united by the people through a massive vote. In the minds of the Senegalese, Ousmane Sonko is more than just an administrative employee whose performance is evaluated at the end of the quarter. He is the architect of "The Project," the soul of a years-long struggle that embodies a social hope. Calling him a "citizen-appointed," while legally accurate, obscures the symbolic dimension of a man who sacrificed everything to make this election possible.
The Republic dislikes ambiguity, and the Palace dislikes sharing power even more. The authority of the Head of State is the keystone of our institutions. No one can challenge it without weakening the Republic.
However, the strength of this authority grows when it acknowledges its foundations. To normalize the role of the Prime Minister to the point of trivialization risks diluting the vital force that brought this regime to power. One does not treat the "father of victory" as a mere scapegoat.
The tone has changed. The President is now setting a clear course and taking back control. He is reminding everyone who decides and who executes. This assertion of presidential sovereignty signals the end of the honeymoon period for the long-standing partnership. "Performance" has become the benchmark, replacing the camaraderie of the struggle with cold, managerial efficiency.
Treating him as a mere agent of the administration weakens the electric current that powers the engine of change.
The Constitution gives power, but history is an exceptional ally.
The duo is finished. The President is back in control.
The Republic benefits from being strong, but it also benefits from being grateful to its builders. Respecting the place of those who paved the way is not a sign of weakness, but a mark of republican wisdom. It is time to close the parenthesis of technical details and reopen that of fraternal co-creation, for therein lies the true strength of your mandate.
